IMMORTALS!

Blood, guts, sword, knife and spear wielding warriors of yesteryear in the dark, mythical, historical sense, are the order of the day in this movie- highly not recommended viewing!

The violence in Immortals is apparently seen as “acceptable” with violent scenes continuous in the first 15 minutes of a movie (and every second or third scene thereafter SERIOUSLY!), thus raising questions about the imbalance of censorship these days.

Well, as humans we are certainly are not immortal, but maybe because that’s the name of this movie and I hear some people saying “it’s only a bit of entertainment”… it’s therefore ok to kill and maim and go on a flesh rampage, not at all really though is it! The Bible is pretty obvious and clear that we die, know nothing and are raised from death, and there’s a lot more that could be said about that in clarification. We don’t consider violence as palatable and it seems that the world around us is increasingly more fundamentalist and violent by the day.

But IMMORTALS the movie “based on”, quite loosely, Greek Mythology, an epic blockbuster of sorts… to me is a movie that uses this genre to give permission to senseless and excessive violence, to the extent that by reality would be prohibited and seen as “atrocities” by national and international law!

Should you watch a movie of some other genre, then the kind of violence in IMMORTALS would be censored and filmmakers forced to curtail the levels. But in this movie it’s clear that the movie industry perceives that violence in the context of mythology and other historical genre’s is perfectly acceptable. It’s an interesting hypocrisy that censorship bodies are willing to make “no comment” statements about, if you get what I mean!

Anyways, how do we make sense of viewing something like this and remaining true to ourselves in Christ? It’s a question worth asking before heading down the entertainment road to oblivion with movies such as IMMORTALS.
